A week to slow down. To look. To rest.

The Prairie Residency offers one artist a week of quiet immersion in Byron Bay - time and space to observe, reflect and let new ideas take shape.

This is not a programme. There are no production obligations. Just unstructured, self-directed time in a place built for looking and resting - to walk, sit, notice, and explore. 

In the spirit of exchange, the selected artist will gift one artwork to Prairie - whether existing, or a new work informed by the residency.

The Host

Prairie is shaped by someone who understands the inner life of an artist. Kirsty Marshall is an emerging artist who recently graduated at Byron School of Art, whose work begins outdoors - in walking, looking, and sitting with a landscape. As a practising artist, Kirsty knows what it means to need time and space to be inspired. Prairie is her answer to that. 

The Space

Prairie is a carefully considered space for you to find rest, comfort and beauty. A self-contained private dwelling - Spanish plastered walls, high ceilings, fully equipped kitchen, king-size bed, a bath under the stars. Five minutes to Byron town, a stroll to the beach.

Dates: 3 August - 9 August 2026

Open to: Artists working in painting, watercolour or drawing - all levels welcome

Included: Private accommodation for the full week. Artists are responsible for organising their own food and travel to and from the Prairie. 

At the close: The selected artist gifts one artwork to Prairie, and leaves a short written reflection. The artwork is chosen and proposed by the artist at application stage.
